Tweaks for smaller box sizes

I hadn't realized until reading on these forums that the cake mix box sizes had decreased. I was wondering if using the Cake Mix Extender recipe would compensate and bring the quantity of batter back up to the amount that the 18.25oz boxes produced?

I'm making two cakes for this Saturday and both are the same flavor so I'm tyring to figure out how many boxes I need. I'm making a 9x13, 6" and 9".

I suggest using 2 mixes plus the extender ingredients. That should be enough batter for all 3 pans.
A 9x13x2 should use 1 & 1/2 regular 18.25 oz mixes
A 6"x2 and the 9"x2 rounds should use 1 regular 18.25
So the way I see it 2 mixes extended should be fine for all, don't you agree?

Does the extender double the yield? I would use 4mixes for those pans, plus my little additives, that add about 1/2 cup per mix.

A couple weeks ago I used the small mixes and I weighed it to make it weigh 18.5 oz, I used about 18 boxes, rather that the 16 it called for, and they baked up nicely. I had a friend use them without compensating for the smaller amount of mix, and used her regular recipe, and she had to re-bake.

I would rather make 1 cake for $150, than 3 for $50 each.

Thanks, very helpful info. The extender recipe I have says it adds an extra 1/2box to the 18.25oz box size.
