When putting fondant on a 21 shaped cake, how do you make sure that you aren't touching the '1' when icing the number 2 to not ruin it? how far space do you separate the numbers?

I would ice then seperately on thier own cardboards (cut to the size & shape of #) and then place them on a larger board together.
