Looking for advice on covering cake boards

Hi, I love covering my cake boards in fondant to match the cake, but i find that it becomes cracked and doesnt look very nice around the edges, i thought about using pretty papers but then figured it would be greasy..... any ideas/ suggestions?

Hi Christine, after I cover the board in fondant, I run my fingures around the edge, making the paste smooth and curvey. So it won't be sharp... Hope that helps. icon_smile.gif

If you don't want to use fondant, try wrapping paper or fabric. I cover the board with that then contact paper. I make sure the cake is on a separate cake board that I place on top of the contact paper so the cake is not in direct contact. You can do lots of neat things with paper and fabric:

Same as Poohsmama, but I use food safe cellophane on top. The possibilities are endless.

I cover all my boards - so as the fondant covers the edge - then the next day i add my ribbon - for me it just finishes the board...

To add the ribbon - dip the entire length of ribbon in a bowl of sugar glue -

Holding ribbon up high over your sink - run your thumb and finger down the length of ribbon to remove excess sugar glue-

Then apply to edge of fondant covered board

Voila ................ your board is now dressed for you cake.

I couldn't quite tell from the photos, but do you put a ribbon around the edge of your board? That covers any bits and pieces of fondant. I use double sided tape to hold it in place.

Yes - i cover the entire board and take the fondant down over the edge - trim off excess with a piece of accetate film - then when dry and firm thats when i put the ribbon on...
Have a peek at this link - as the darker ribbon stands out more against the lime ribbon....so you should be able to see what i mean - hopefully lollll
