Do brides keep the small top tier of wedding cakes.

When my sister got married many moons ago she kept the top tier of her wedding cake. It was to be frozen and served at the first anniversary. Or is just a regional or old tradition?

I know it is still done. I don't know if it is done everywhere or by every bride, but most of my friends/family have done that.

I got married a year ago...and we are being made a new fresh, top tier for our 1st anniversary as part of the agreement when we ordered our original wedding cake.

i think the tradition stuck in some form, i know alot of brides who will recieve a free small cake for their anniversary rather than keeping the top tier, though in England it was major (with fruitcake) to keep your top tier, and then use it as a christening cake within the first year of marriage, though i dont hear of that anymore icon_sad.gif

It's about half & half around here. My next bride is keeping the top (6") tier but both of my previous two brides served the top tier.

I always ask my brides what they are doing with it (so I can help them plan for appropriate remaining servings and so I can include that detail on the cake info sheet) and they are 50/50. We do offer a free (not a replica) tier a year later for any of our brides.

I find that the tradition is fading. Most need to eat the top tier within 3 months because it has butter in the icing and butter can't be frozen over 3 months. This tradition was ok when icing was made with a shortening base. Because the couple might be moving from the area, or will be eating the top tier on their honeymoon or don't want to eat freezer burned cake, they're coming back a year later for a fresh 6" cake or chosing not to keep it.
