Baby Blocks Cake Need Advice!

If anyone has any advice on making cake shaped like baby blocks, I would really appreciate it! I'm doing a cake for a baby shower and it is to be 2 blocks on the bottom and 1 stacked on the top. I will be making a sheet cake and then cutting the squares from that. I've only made round cakes so this will be a new adventure for me. Any tips for getting these blocks to look symmetrical would be of great help!

I make them from 8" squares, leveled first. Then cut into fourths and stack. Each 8" square produces two, 4" cubes.

You just need to make sure it's a perfect cube or the effect is lost.

Thanks! I did these last weekend and I think they came out well. I have to say though, these were a bit of a PIA! Getting them perfectly smooth took me hours it seemed. They are frosted in an American X IMBC lemon buttercream.
