Recently I did a small cake using the ruffled fondant. I used a teriyaki stick to ruffle the edges of a circle of fondant and then stuck the strip onto the side of a cake. Afterwards, my fingers were KILLING me! For a couple days after, actually.

A co-worker who is getting married next year would like a five tier wedding cake.. covered in ruffled fondant, of course. Only that technique would probably be a week of nonstop work, and no one else knows how to do it. Where I work, we use very little fondant. Everything is done in buttercream, fondant really is an accent or a last resort.

So, finally, my question is.. is there an easier way to get fondant/gumpaste ruffles on a cake WITHOUT having to roll a teriyaki stick a trillion times for the effect?

I would soo appreciate any advice. Thanks in advance!

I've done ruffles in both fondant and buttercream. For the fondant, I used 2 sizes of ball tool; the larger first and then went over it again with a smaller one. The buttercream ruffles were almost as pretty and a lot easier and faster than fondant. I also think I'd be trying to convince her that 5 tiers of ruffles is over kill and wouldn't she like it better to have just 2 or 3 tiers ruffled? icon_lol.gif

Trust me, I've tried (and failed) to get him to reconsider a 5 tiered ruffle cake. He's got his heart set on it. I asked him to consider a 3 tier.. but he says he'd love a 5 tier so much more, and it's a tower cake no less haha
Just last week there was a request for a ruffle cake that was done in buttercream.. and it was completed very quickly, probably no more than 15 minutes (the woman who did is most certainly efficient!) and he absolutely HATED it. So, it's safe to say that's out. I have pushed the idea of a ruffled swag, at first he shot the idea down but I think I've drilled into his head the fact this doing 5 tiers of ruffle (from a 6" to a 14") would take forever and cost MY arm and leg!

Thanks for the advice. I'm going to have to cross my fingers and pray. LOL

I know EXACTLY what you are talking about!! I taped a piece of foam sponge to my fingers as a cushion. Took a few minutes to get used to, but it worked pretty well.
