Use Old Business Name for New business??

Wow! been awhile since I've been on here! loving all the changes!!

But my question is.....Before the new Cottage Law in Florida I went through the process of getting my license to bake at home. Was open for a lil over 2 years, but because of a divorce I had to close the business & haven't actually baked or anything since then...been about 2 years as well.

I am now in a position where I can start baking & doing cakes again (very excited & very very nervous)......wondering if I should use my old business name: Sugar Topped Creations. Still have business cards tucked away somewhere or should I start with a new name?

I still get calls from people asking about Sugar Topped Creations.....so leaning towards that...but wanted to see what others thought???

If you already had a solid customer base, and no issues when you shut the business down earlier, I would go with the old name especially since it still rings a bell with former clients. Less paperwork, and you don't have to go through the process of explaining that the old business is now called a new name.

Random thought: Not sure how divorces go but depending on when or how you started the business in the first place, is reviving the business going to entitle your ex to income from it? I just keep thinking of Michael Douglas and the piece in the news some time ago about his ex having rights to some of his pay from a new movie he did (after the divorce) because it was a sequel to one he starred in while they were married.

thanks for the reply!

there were no issues when i shut down before. and the only reason i had to close was because my ex got the house....and since that is where i had my biz/license had to close. didn't have the resources to open a different facility at the time. I had less than 2 months to close down and get out...!

but the business itself was just in my name, but unfortunately he got the house. So thankfully he has no claim to any future business ...already verified that w/my attny!! lol

I agree with vgcea, if there were no negative issues it's smart to keep Sugar Topped Creations. Great name!
