Help with adding jello?

I have white cake mix and plan on following the original WASC recipe. But instead of pudding mix, can I add orange jello mix to the cake? To give it more orange flavour???

I havent tried the orange, I wouldnt see why you wouldnt be able to. I add strawberry jello (dry) to my strayberry cakes and it turns out great.

Yikes! I definitely wouldn't add Jell-O to a cake. I tried it once with a strawberry cake and thought it was gross (not to mention the off-putting neon color).

Your best bet is to zest a couple of oranges and add a teaspoon or two of orange extract or oil to the batter. That will give you a perfectly flavored orange cake without putting anything unnatural and neon colored into your cake.

Have you tried it with the WASC recipe? Im using boxed cake mix. Also how about usuing the poking hole on the cake method? Where you bake a regular cake and then poke holes and add jello mixed in water onto the cake?


I dont have any oranges in the house and would like to bake the cake...I do have orange jam with zests in it...Can I do anything with it?

I make my creamsicle cake with orange jello powder all the time, and it's not bright neon colored and it has a very mild flavor. Super good starting with a french vanilla mix too. I whisk it in with the cake mix dry ingredients, then add the wet as per the box instructions, and bake as usual.

Ohhh I have a french vanilla cake mix at home as well....I guess just follow the cake mix recipe, add the jello and bake as usual? Any frosting that might taste good with it? Also what does it taste more like? Orange or french vanilla?

Also I have a lot of egg yolks left over...can I use thme instead of whole eggs? What would the equal to 3 whole eggs?

I pour the dry mix into my mixing bowl, add the jello powder and whisk it together, then add the water, eggs, and oil. The flavor is almost exactly a creamsicle - a distinct orange flavor, yet creamy if that makes any sense. Everyone I made it for loved it! I use a sweet cream buttercream for it too, but I'm not sure if you can get that flavoring where you are. I think vanilla bean would be yummy with it though too.

Sorry I didn't see the part about the egg yolks. I'm not sure about that part - you could just make a yummy pastry cream from them and fill your orange cake/cupcakes before you ice it. That would use up some of your egg yolks.

I always use lemon Jello in a lemon cake and strawberry Jello in strawberry cake. I mix the Jello with the liquid in the cake and just pour in and bake as usual. It gives those citrus or fruity cakes a sweet 'n sour flavor.

Thanks, made it with following the WASC recipe and just adding jello powder and orange juice instead of the water and it was GREAT!

Orange Dreamsicle - MacsMom
2 boxes white cake mix
2 c melted orange sherbet
2/3 c OJ or diet orange soda (soda suggested by cinderspritzer: "I added ... diet sunkist soda.... and it tastes FREAKING AWESOME!!!")
2 c flour
1-3/4 c sugar
1-1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp baking soda (modified to add baking soda 3/10/10)
2 c sour cream
9 egg whites
1/4 c oil
1 T orange extract
*Perhaps some food coloring

Wow, this sounds awesome, thank you!!! but what filling would you use for a cake like this?? it sounds like it wouldn't need any filling as delicious as it sounds icon_biggrin.gif
