Using Dum Dum suckers for center of gumpaste rose?

How would you do this? The sucker does not have a point on the top. Does that matter? I am trying to make my roses as light as possible. They need to go down the side of a cake and I need to make about 45 of them I have also read about celbuds, but those are expensive. Any other suggestions or tips?

I have heard of using suckers but have not tried it. The class I took they taught us with dried spaghetti and a little bit of gumpaste. Dried spaghetti should be pretty light (but fragile). Good Luck icon_smile.gif

I really like that idea. I've never heard of it before, but it sounds like it would work. The stick of the sucker would have to be food safe since it's already stuck in a food product, so you could stick it right into the cake...right??? The only thing that came to mind for me is that the sucker would be bigger than the normal cone you would start out with. So I guess you would end up with pretty big roses.

Let us know if you try it and how it works out. I'm intrigued! icon_biggrin.gif

This was one of the ways we were taught in the wilton class. It just makes for a big rose, but it does work.

I make the center out of a gumpaste "teardrop". You can make them all ahead of time and then add your petals after the "teardrops" attached to wire are all dry.
Of course you can do it before they dry, but I never have time to make a lot of roses in one sitting.

I've tried using a dum dum - the gumpaste melted the sucker, I had red goo running down the stick and the gumpaste never actually dried. I know some people make it work but to me it was not worth all the effort making my flowers then to come back to them later, have them ruined and having to remake them using a properly dried gumpaste center

If I am making large roses , I use a styrofoam egg as the centre,

I took a class several years ago where we didn't have time for gumpaste cone centers to dry. We used the little styrofoam balls from a craft store - about 1" in diameter. The open-cell styrofoam can be pinched into shape just using your fingers, then hot-glued to a wire. They worked like a charm, lightened the finished product, and a big bag of the little balls was maybe $2 - very economical.

you can also use the rice crispy treat mixture to make rose centers, let them harden up a bit first just like gp centers.

I find the jelly beans to be just the right size and you can kind of shape them a little too. I use floral wire and make them the same as you would using a "cone" shaped piece of gumpaste. Good luck!
