Putting a flat-bottomed figurine on a cake

How do I secure a flat-bottomed porcelain cake topper onto a buttercream cake? I know that I should put a dowel into the cake underneath the figurine so it won't sink, but is there any way to actually make sure it will stay on the cake?

Oh, and I should mention that the wedding reception will be on a boat, so there might be some movement.

I'd appreciate some advice!!

I would actually secure it to a small cardboard cakeboard, with hot glue and then cover it over with buttercream to hide the board once it is in place on the cake.

I have to do this for a cake coming up too. I think I am going to use buttercream icing as a 'glue' to hold the figure on top of the cake as well as using a proper dowel to support the weight.

Thanks for the responses. Do you think it would be possible to glue a dowel rod perpendicular to a small piece of cake board, then glue the cake board to the bottom of the figurine, and just push the dowel down into the cake?

I would check with the bride first if she minds you using hot glue on the figure. I don't see why you can't use the little cake board. Depending on the weight, I don't know if you would even need that though. How heavy is it?

Does your figurine have a hole through the bottom? Last cake I did like that I simply cut base for the figurine from a disposable plate, poked a hole in the middle of it and used royal icing the attach the figurine. Then I stuck a dowel through the cake and left it protruding and slipped the figurine over the excess dowel. More royal icing to further secure the figurine to the cake itself.

No, unfortunately there's no hole in the bottom. That's why I'm so worried about it tipping over on the cake. I really would like to make sure that it'll stay upright.
