I am doing a graduation cake and i need to make a pencil, newspaper and a computer out of fondant or gumpaste. Does anyone have any tutorials or templates that would help me. Or, any other ideas. The gentleman is graduation from IU with a degree in journalism.
Thank you!
I've made several cakes with pencils on them (go figure!) and all you have to do is roll out a stick of fondant and shape a point on the end. The rest is done by painting on different colors of vodka-diluted food colors (yellow for the shaft, beige for the wood, black for the point and red for the eraser). They look surprisingly life-like. For the newspaper I would get an edible image of a real newspaper and attach it to a thin sheet of fondat with CMC glue or even just a little water (but VERY little in either case, or you'l dissolve the edible image). Trim the fondant to the edge of the image and, if you want to, fold it like a newspaper. For the computer (I'm thinking laptop here), I'd start with a flat slab of RKTs covered in black fondant for the main body. I'd use a rectangle of black gumpaste for the lid with two or three skewers sticking out of the edge at an angle so it can be attached to the base of the laptop. I'd use another edible image for the screen. I'm not quite sure how to do the keyboard, though. Probably key by key and with lots of patience! Hope this turns out like you want it to. I'd love to see a picture when it's finished.
