Hi all, Just wondering if anyone can give me some tips on how to get a car cake super duper shiney? It is a replica of a customers car and the paint job is mega shiny. I asked a local cake decorator on facebook I follow how she did it on one of her cakes and she was a bit vague with the details. She did suggest spraying it with cooking spray and also covering the finished cake with cold flan gel. I have no idea what flan gel even is??

Any tips greatly appreciated

Eww! Cooking oil?! really?? all over the cake?

On "Cake Boss" they use a steamer! It melts the fondant just a little bit and it leaves it really shiny!

I found an episode of cake boss where they use the steamer, buddy makes a birthday cake his nephew, that's a black game station, you can see them steaming it,

A great glaze is half vodka and half clear corn syrup. Heat it up and paint away! High gloss look.

You can also rub it down with crisco but eventually the shine will wear off. Same with steaming, I think--but I think it would last that day.

I've been looking for a way to make glaze, so I'll definitely try this! But what keeps all the vodka from evaporating when you heat it up, so you'll just be left with pure corn syrup?
Let them eat cake. I'd rather be decorating them anyway.

Yeah, I found that steaming seems to disappear after a few hours.....don't know why. I thought it was me. lol The vodka and corn syrup works so well and it stays!

You don't heat it up too long. Maybe 20-30 secs in the micro to make it a little runnier. All I know is that it works really well. Not sure if the vodka would evaporate that quickly.

Do you have an airbrush? I don't know about spraying the vodka/corn syrup (haven't used it), but I spray mine down with plain water. Same idea as steaming I guess, but since there is more water (but it won't be so much that it will damage the cake) it stays nicely.

With a clean dampen cloth rub over the icing to get rid of all icing sugar. Let the water get dried and then rub the icing faster to make your cake shinier. If you need to sheen, well you can steam the fondant lightly.

I am making Sunflowers and wanted them to be shinny. I love the idea about the about the vodka and corn syrup. I do not have or buy alcohol so I used clear vanilla instead. Love the result! These look so shinny.

PME makes an edible glaze spray that make things really shiny without losing the shine hours later. My local cake supplier carriers it so your might also without having to order online. Safe for gumpaste, fondant and chocolate. HTH! good luck!

Have you use the glaze and it is really shinny?? I'm making a gumpaste wine bottle and want to give it the real glass look.

I use oil mixed with some pearl lustre dust, it works like a charm - the oil is absorbed just like crisco would be, it is completely tasteless
