Pricing cupcakes

Cupcakes are very popular right now...what I did was check around my area to see what cupcake shops were charging. Some shops are ridiculously high but you should get a pretty good idea of a competative price for your area. The average price in my area for a classic size iced cupcake starts around $2.95

Thank you. I have a customer who wanted a very small Cat in the Hat cake and 4 dozen iced cupcakes. When I gave her a price for cake at $2.50 per serving, she decided she wanted all cupcakes, which I was going to do for $1.25 each (undecorated). Now she wants to know if there is an extra charge to decorate them. Duh I'll call around to area bakeries tomorrow.People don't know what is involved in making edible decorations.

You'll also want to figure out how much you will be spending in ingredients, and how long the complete order will take you (either decorated or undecorated), including prep, baking, decorating, packaging, and cleanup (make sure to pay yourself a decent hourly wage!). Plus you should factor in overhead such as license fees, additional utility costs, liability insurance, etc.
Once you have your cost, you will have a better idea of how much of a profit margin you can add to meet the market's price. If market price is below your cost, you need to either cut costs or find a new market.
