I use a teaspoon of salt and salted butter in my recipe and I've never had anyone complain it's too sweet (or salty!). I just make sure I dissolve the salt in the milk before adding it to the butter. I think the salt definitely cuts down on the sweetness.

Try adding a teasp. of almond extract.......AND the salt..... ( I use popcorn salt because it is so fine )

Thanks everyone, I ended up adding the cream cheese suggestion to my last cake, thanks carmijok, it wasn't too sweet, it received great reviews! icon_biggrin.gif
