My friend who is a Girl Scout Leader wants me to come to a meeting so the girls can earn some type of badge. I will help/show the girls how to use some tips and basics of cake decorating. She has an older troop and her girls are older (I think they are early teens).

Please Help!!!!!

She is going to tell the girls to bring a 8 inch cake to decorate and 6 cupcakes. (I don't think I could tell them to bring anything smaller as most people who don't bake only have this size). I told her I would supply the icing but am now panicking. I don't think that I could make enough icing for 10 girls to use!! I looked at AC Moore and premade icing is expensive. I will be reimbursed, but am trying to keep costs low for them.

Suggestions.......

Use tthe Wilton one. It's the best icing to learn techniques. I don't think you will get much cheaper.

Lightbulb moment... I bought a huge tub of Sam's But-R-Cream for a huge school fundraiser. About six high school juniors filled my scratch bakery with boxes of cake mix and I helped them make hundreds of cupcakes in a few hours. I then gave them all a mixer and access to my extracts and gel colors. They got to make their own flavors. Then we all got together with a piping bag and tip. They practiced with this Sam's stuff on wax paper, put the practice frosting back in the bowl, and they all were piping pros in minutes. They had so much fun.

That huge tub was about $37.00, but you may not be able to make that much Wilton recipe for less. Plus no labor on your part, except toting that tub. I think it's 25 pounds. I think Costco has something similar.

You could either color the frosting ahead of time, or have them bring bowls and spatulas. Then they could share 10 different colors plus the white.

The frosting was perfect for amateur decorating.

If you can purchase premade icing for about a dollar per pound, a 30 lb. bucket would only cost $3 per girl scout and yield 3 lbs. per person to use. It's affordable.

Here's a link to the Girl Scout program for Cake Decorating. It describes what is needed to obtain a badge.

If the goal IS to obtain a badge, then you need to talk with your friend, the GS Leader, and nail down some more specifics.

I did this same thing last night for a girl scout group. There were 9 girls, 3rd and 5th grade. I provided each girl with a 6 inch round single layer cake. I used my own icing--I always have containers of leftover colors in the fridge (I was so glad to finally get rid of that purple!) I made one recipe (2 lb. powdered sugar) of icing to ice the cakes and then they used the colors I had to decorate with. I iced the cakes for them (faster with that age) but let them do the smoothing. I only used round tips and star tips with this age group. They practiced on waxed paper while the icing was crusting enough to smooth.

I thought they did a really good job. It was hard at first to keep them contained because they were so excited, but once we really got going, they were fine.

All in all, I spent less than $20 on my supplies and I may get reimbursed. I was doing it for a friend though, so that part wasn't a big deal to me. Plus, like I said, I got to empty all those containers! icon_smile.gif

Wilton also has a Icing Fun curriculum that catered to Girl Scouts...it comes with the tips, Bag, Coupler..you can also print the practice pages offline...the link is below

http://www.wilton.com/classes/icing-fun/

I was also going to recommend Sam's for the icing

Hope this helps
