Your standard tier is 2 - 2" layers, torted or not. Some people use 3 layers but 2 is the norm. That makes the usual tier 4 - 4 1/2 inches. HTH

I'd just bake double in your 2" cake pans for 4" tall tiers.

For small diameter tiers (6" or smaller), you can get away with 3 inches tall, but for larger diameter tiers (18" or larger), they'll look better and more proportionate to the overall cake design as a strong, sturdy base if they are 6 inches tall.

AS A GENERAL RULE, YOUR TIERS SHOULD BE 4 INCHES TALL.

Is it noisy in here?

Ditto to all the pps. 4" tall, bake as many layers as you need to achieve that.
