Topsy Turvy Cake

This past weekend I made a 3 tier topsy turvy cake and when I was getting ready to stack the cake i noticed that the bottom tier had split. The cake was Sharon Zambito's recipe and i bought her dvd for the topsy turvy cake and followed it, the only differnce was that i put a raspberry filling in the cake. I would really appricate it if someone could please tell me what i am doing wrong!!!!

Was it properly stacked? Dowels in properly to support the tiers?
