I am making a buttercream cake and need to attach a fondant catapillar to the side. Its not a flat piece of fondant but fairly heavy pieces? Help icon_smile.gif

I would put a toothpick in each little segment of the caterpillar that I could stick into the cake and then additionally attach it with royal icing.

I don't think you can use royal icing on buttercream can you? I thout it would go 'mushy'?

I just did this the other day and I used a straw. I cut it up into the appropriate sizes and stuck them into the fondant 'snail' in my case and then put it into the cake, it worked great.

You are, of course, right about the royal icing, cowie. I hardly ever do buttercream, so I wasn't thinking straight. If you just have to use some stick 'um, maybe melted chocolate would be better. But I really like your idea of using straws. I think I'm going to try that the next time I have to put something heavy on the side of a cake. Thanks for the tip!
