i am baking a 2 tiered cake that will be a 10 and 8 in round. what is the best, sturdiest, wallet-friendly board/base to use? i heard foam core. what is that? all suggestions greatly appreciated.

Foam core is great stuff for a base. You can find it at JoAnns or Micheals,sometimes even Walmart has it. In CT you can usually get a piece of foam core for about $2.00. Your other option is buying cake circles which most places you have to buy a whole pack which may not be what you need. Hands down the most frugal way to make a cake base is use a pizza box or other cardboard box cut to the size you need. Hope this helps

Go to a thrift store and buy a glass turntable plate for a microwave or another suitable glass or plastic plate. Solid, sturdy, clear glass so doesn't take away from the cake and only costs a couple of bucks. And no cutting or sawing required, reusable too.

Another frugal way to go is to buy a packing box. You can find them as large as 16"x16" at Walmart for under $2. Cut it to the size you need.

I agree with denetteb, for a 2tier cake is better to have a sturdy cake board, the thrif store is your best bet.

so is the foam that im looking for just thick styro foam slabs? cause they can break.

Foam core is a layer of heavy slick (coated) paper, a layer of foam, and another layer of heavy paper, glued together. It comes in different widths/depths. It is also found in art supply stores, office/stationery supply stores, even some hardware stores or home improvement centers. When you're in the hardware or home improvement store, you can also get a drywall cutter, which will cut perfect circles, pretty much any size you want. Then put a ribbon around the edge.

I think most everything in my gallery is on my microwave plate. I'm a hobbyist, and this works great for me.

You can buy foam core board at Dollar Tree. I use a drywall circle cutter and cut as many sizes as I can with one piece. I will tape a few circles together depending how sturdy I need it to be. CHEAP and easy!

I bought some foam boards at Micheals craft strore. They are really strong. I just cover them with fancy foil or whatever else you choose to.
Since I once make cakes for friends and family, I just get them back afterwards icon_smile.gif
Smaller cakes would probably be fine on a few of the reg (thicker ones) cake circles glues together. Cover the seam with some ribbon.
