I am hoping someone can help me out here. We will be moving to Alabama in a month and I was planing on starting a very small bakery/cake decorating type business out of our home when we move. I am finding mixed information online and am also getting mixed answers from people. AL does have a cottage food law but has some restrictions. Does anyone know if it is legal to have a bakery from home in AL? Is there anyone here from AL that bakes from home? I am going to be so bummed if I can't run this business as I find so much joy in baking! Please helP!!!

Alabama doesn't have a Cottage Food Law. There is a proposal in the works now but it hasn't passed. Unless something has changed very very recently you can't sell baked goods from your home or any other unlicensed, non inspected, non permitted kitchen or structure.

There is a bill in the Alabama senate right now that would make home-based bakeries legal. There's a thread on this board about it. As it stands right now, you can legally make and sell baked goods from your home (for profit) but only at farmer's markets. Check out Alabama's farmer's market website for the details about the current law.

AHello! Does anyone out there know if the cottage food law enables people like me to bake and sell from my home?

I am from Mobile, AL.  As of June 1st the New, passed Cottage food law goes into effect in Alabama. It takes the place of the one that you could only sell at farmer markets.  You can bake and sell from your home. It is bill # 36544, it passed in March 2014 and goes into effect on June 1st.   You can join the facebook group https://www.facebook.com/groups/376943859113608/ and it tells you more info on what you can sell, etc.  I hope this helps
