I'm doing a cake for my friend's bridal shower in May. She had her first one last weekend and I did the cake for it (the rosette cake in my gallery) - the hostesses for her 2nd shower asked me to do the cake for her next one as well. I'm stumped - they said do whatever I want. I have zero fondant experience and want to do something different than the rosettes.
They're going to vegas to get married, and I would love to do a vegas themed cake. But all of the vegas-themed cakes I've seen here seem way too advanced for my experience level. I'd hate to do another traditional wedding-type cake, but that's what I'm comfortable with at the moment. What do y'all say? The shower is May 12th so I have time to teach myself new techniques. Also I think it will be about 30-40 people.
Thanks everyone!!!

Your 3 photos show you have all the basics down, so something simple in fondant should be fairly easy for you to create. Here are 2 ideas from the CC gallery:

You could do the basic cake and frosting with buttercream (since you are used to it and do it well), THEN do the remainder of the decorations with fondant.
The poker cake: You could create fondant poker chips, money, etc. and could have the deck of cards with two face cards showing: the King of Hearts (groom), and the Queen of Hearts (bride). If you can get photos, you could do edible images on the "face" cards. You can use Edible Markers to make the cards:

All you'd have to do is purchase the Wilton pre-colored fondant packets like this one which would be plenty for poker decorations.
Rolled Fondant Primary Colors Multi-Pack:

The Roulette Cake: More advanced fondant skills. You could create a wrap of fondant for the sides and a circle of fondant for the top. Make a rolled "tube" for the inner and outer rings on the table The outer "rolled tube" would cover the join of the sides and top. The rest of the stuff you could cut and place and pipe similar to the inspiration cake.
