I am making a violin cake for Wednesday (most parts to harden are done). I've done this twice before, but never really got the neck of the instrument the way I want it. In trying to figure out how to do it, this time I thought maybe I could make a mould of the neck by pushing it down into something that would hold the shape and be sturdy enough for me to push fondant/gp 50/50 into it and get the shape right.

Here's a visual: http://www.como-limpiar.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/violin.jpg
The *middle* picture shows a profile of the neck of the violin (the part the player holds with his/her non-bow hand). There's that rounded rectangle void shape. That's the part I want to push down into something, like clay or plaster, BUT I DON'T HAVE CLAY OR PLASTER!

Any thoughts as to how I can accomplish this on short notice and with regular household/children's items!? [/url]

I'm probably late on this but there's a couple ways I can think of in case you get into a situation like this again. 1. Use gumpaste as the mold and let dry for a day or two until firm enough to use without breaking. 2. Make porcelain clay (some recipes use household items) and use that as a mold. I've made small molds using gumpaste and that's worked well for me before, so hopefully this helps someone.

I forgot to add, you may want to use cornstach in between the mold and the fondant to keep it from sticking. For the porcelain clay, you'd want to seal it so that the mold itself doesn't come in contact with the fondant.

I like using Amazing Mold Putty; I got mine at Hobby Lobby. They have a weekly coupon for 40% off on regularly priced item; that way it is more affordable. I don't know if one package would do a violin neck.
