Pricing a 3D cake???

Hi Everyone!
I need a little help pricing a 3D cake. My buttercream cakes start at $3 per serving and I am not sure if I should do $3.50 or $3.75 or $4. The lady wants a 3D grave digger (monster truck) covered in cream cheese icing. SHe wants around 25 slices and I know that you need to make a larger cake because when you carve it out it reduces the number of servings. I have never officially charged for a 3D cake. I just started selling since they passed the cottage food law. The 3D cakes that I have done so far have been for my son or my best friend (and I usually do it a little bit above cost for her.) Thanks for the help. Any input would really be appreciated. icon_biggrin.gif

How much will the ingredients for the cake cost, and how many hours will it take you to make (including prep, baking, decorating, and cleanup)?

You can't really do a per-serving price since the vast majority of the cost will be labor regardless of how many servings there are. Our 3D cakes start at $250 regardless of number of servings.

See, you learn something new every day! Hehehe. Ingredients are basically the same as my regular cakes because it will be a vanilla Wasc. How do you know how big of a cake do you need for a certain amount of people? The ones I have done so far are usually way bigger than the amount needed because I just go by the look I want regardless of the number of servings (since they are usually for me or my friends.) Thanks!

my 3D cakes start at $175, and a specific monster truck that requires more attention to detail in paint and design than a generic 4 x 4, would be $225-250. Most of that price is for the time and extra materials and construction of the cake board to make the platform for the truck to appear jumping. 3D cakes also aren't my favorite things to do, so i price accordingly icon_wink.gif

if the full sculpted price is too much, i'd have a plan B of making a RKT Grave Digger for $40 and put i on dowels jumping, or plan C: a cool dirt arena where the client could put the monster truck toys.

That is a great idea. I am gonna set my starting price at $150. I will give her a quote on the cool dirt cake because that is probably more withing her budget (I am just assuming that because she picked buttercream instead of fondant.) Thanks! =)
