What is the right size cake / tier ratio?

Ok dumb question: when doing a tiered cake what are the right cake sizes? With a round cake as an example are the sizes 2in differences, like 10/8/6, or more like 4in differences, like 12/8/4? Appreciate any input. Thanks

I do 3" differences and 2" differences. It all depends on the "look" you are going for, and that is both a client and personal preference. You must take into account serving portion sizes and numbers, plus the height of the tiers you bake to create the ideal aesthetic.

Thanks for the feed back! I've always done 2in, but I'm not sure that's what I like. So I think I will try 3in this time around!

3 and 4 inches are good if you need to put something on the top edges of the cake.

2 inches works for cakes as well, and looks really good for some designs.
