I'm doing a very hungry catipillar and she asked me to make the smash cake into an apple. She found a recipe and picture on pottery barn. You start with 2 9" cakes and carve it down. I charge $2/ serving. I can't see charging her 32$ for a smash cake.......

Well, normally our smash cakes are free with purchase of the 1st bday cake, but in the case of a special design like that, especially a carved cake, I don't think $32 is unreasonable at all. You could give her a small discount since she is getting the 1st bday cake, but other than that, charge it just the same as you normally would.

Ok it does make sense too. She also asked me to make a special recipe for the smash cake. Thanks for replying so fast!

Agreed...the fact that is a smash cake doesn't mean it will take fewer ingredients or less labor, so if you don't want to lose money on it you need to charge what you usually would. Be ready with a simpler alternative if the customer balks at the price.

BTW if you haven't already done so be sure to obtain permission from the copyright owners, since The Very Hungry Caterpillar is under copyright protection.

Are you making a 9" smash cake?

If so then $32 is no where near enough, and that's a HUGE smash cake. The poor kid won't know what to do with such a huge cake... LOL.

I give a free 3" smash cake with first birthdays, it comes iced in BC with a think fondant ribbon at the base and a cut out number 1 on the top, but if they wants something above and beyond then pay full price. It takes minutes to put together one of my standard smash cakes... not so with a carved creations.

I was able to talk her into a smaller smash cake. I'm going to carve a small apple out of 2 6" round. I think I can half the recipe so I do have to much waste. I need to look into the copy write issue.......thank you for making me aware.
