I posted this in cake decorating, but thought that might not be the right board so I'll repost here too

Hey, I was right in the middle of making a quick dessert for me and hubby to have after dinner tonight and completely forgot to buy vegetable oil when I bought the cake mix.

It says 3 eggs, 1 cup water, and 1/3 cup oil. It doesn't state veggie oil, so would it be ok if I use the oil I have. It's one I bought from costco, and it's a nut/olive/grape oil mix.

I tried looking on google, but some say it will be fine, others say it alters the taste significantlly. Any tips?

And if I can't use that, would melted butter work

Not sure if you finished already, but if it was me, I think I would go with melted butter over the olive oil blend.

I use apple sauce as a substitution for oil when making cake mixes with great results. The cakes are moist and rise perfectly.

Hey for future knowledge one does NOT need oil. I've been baking cakes (box) for more than 20 yrs w/o using any oil at all. Some people use fruit puree` (such as applesauce) but I don't even add that icon_smile.gif You still will have a great cake. BTW I would not use oilive oil as it has a distinct flavor.

Good ideas, I wasn't thinking outside the box like you two were.

Ty all for your replies! I ended up using melted butter since I didn't have any applesauce or anything either lol.
