Has anyone used the new Wilton Sugar Sheets to decorate/cover a cake. I am making my own 200 cupcakes for a cupcake tower and cake to sit on top of the tower for my wedding so I am trying to make it all as easy as possible on me. I was thinking of using the black/white damask sugar sheets to cover the cake in. I plan on making a trial cake just to avoid any chaos before the wedding but wanted to check in with you all to see if any of you have used it or have any tips.
I've used the zebra print twice. The main thing is to get it on there before the icing sets or else it won't stick. I'd suggest cutting the sheets to the size/shape you need before you begin icing so you've got them ready to go when you need them. Oh and get more than you think you need, they're smaller than the packaging makes them look!
I have used the zebra ones as well, and my first attempt failed badly because they dried so fast for me, they got crispy and would not come off the sheet they were packaged in. So have everything ready to go..I used a little misting bottle to mosten my buttercream so the sugar sheet would stick to it. It looked really good and professional when it was done.
For me they didn't, and the problem is the sheets aren't that long, so to cover the sides of a 9" cake I needed two full sheets plus a few extra inches to make it all the way around. So there were 3 seams on the cake, and no way to put the seam at the back of the cake since there were 3. Although, the seams didn't look horrible, I piped a little icing under them to make sure it laid flat on the cake and that helped some...but still, they were noticeable.
Has anyone tried folding a sugar sheet, such as pleating it? Will it just break at the fold?
