So I bought the wondermold doll pan to use as the body for a 3D Hello Kitty cake because I'm not comfortable with carving yet. Anyway, I figured since I have the pan I might make a barbie cake for my little cousin's 8th Birthday in May. The questions I have are 1. How can I use a real barbie with the cake since it's not a pick, and 2. How do I keep the doll nice and straight andher body/waist defined from the skirt portion. I have seen some cakes that look out of balance like the doll sits too deep inside the cake making her torso appear short or something. Anyone familiar with what I'm referring to? I just want tips on how to achieve a nice smooth finish before I take this project on icon_smile.gif Also can the wondermold pan be safely torted and filled? Thanks

Don't push the Barbie all the way in. I'd put her in as far as her upper hips, so that the "skirt" starts below her waist. You might need to use an 8 inch round under the wonder mold since most Barbie's I've seen are taller than the wonder mold by a bit. Maybe use an apple corer or a slender knife to make the hole in the center a bit bigger for her legs/hips to fit.

You can fill it, just use a stiff icing dam.

Also wrap the barbie's legs in saran wrap so they don't get greasy...I always add an extra 8 inch round underneath as Karateka mentioned that a regular sized Barbie is too tall for just the wondermold.Core out a hole ontop and push the Barbie down eye balling it so she doesn't look un proportional...Very Easy to do!!

Thanks kiddiecakes I will definitely bake the 8 in to go under as you guys have both advised it. I see so many nicely decorated doll cakes ruined because the doll looks stumpy in the cake icon_sad.gif My fingers are crossed for a lovely outcome icon_smile.gif

I know what you mean about the cakes being out of proportion .The early ones I did were like that. I used what we call a tiffin but I suspect is the equivelent to a varden tin for a shower cake I did in my pictures. For that I carved a bit around the sides at the top of the cake to slim it down a bit. I also took Barbies legs off, they were refitted later quite succesfully so I didn't need to add an 8 inch underneath. It was a small do so not needed.

Amended to say Sorry it was the mermaid cake I replaced the legs on not the shower but I did take them off on that one as well.
