applying ruffles to dress cake?

Just wondering when applying layers of ruffles to a cake (in this instance a dress cake) is it better to cover the cake in fondant first and then apply the ruffles or will putting them directly onto the icing/crumb coat work? If it helps any, this is the kind of ruffle dress i am refering to...

Hi,

I would cover it in a thin layer of fondant first and then apply the ruffles. This way, you will have a sturdy surface to work with and for the ruffles to adhere too.

I too normally cover the cake with a thin layer of fondant, then attach the ruffles.

Hi, I have done 2 ruffle dress cakes which were inspired by Andrea (Mackandnorm) on youtube (amazing cakes), I only buttercreamed the cake and then attached the ruffles. I used fondant ribbons to create the ruffles. Andrea has now posted a "how to" for this cake......http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K1IIHSerB64&feature=relmfu
