30 slices, out of 10 inch?

How do you get 30 slices out of a 10 inch round? i'm trying to make a diagram using the (move in 2 inches, make a slice, and then cut 1.5 sized slices) this website says you can get 30 using that method..and other websites too..but when i make my diagram on photoshop..i'm coming up with 22 slices! I dont like the wilton way of cutting..trying to use the straight type of cutting.

Yep that's where i got the method of cutting..and I want to use that..except when I take a 10 inch circle, and try to, I can't come up with 30 slices..maybe a 10 inch just can't serve that many?

i've figured out for party servings it's only 28

step0nmi - I don't do wedding cakes, so being its for parties..are you cutting 1x2.5 for parties right? And you get 28 using that slice size?

Based on our research, people who cut cakes at parties (usually parents as opposed to professionals at venues) typically get 16-20 slices out of a 10" cake.

jason_kraft - Right..Here's my problem, a customer wanted a cake that will serve 25, so I told her a 10 inch, thinking I could give her my guide that I could make using 1x2x4 inch slices, getting 30 slices. I'm worried that if she cuts it differently, she wont have enough cake. But if i'm giving her a guide on HOW to cut it to have enough, am I covered? And it is for a party..not a wedding.

If a customer needs a party cake for 25 people I would recommend a 12" round. If the cake will be served at a professional venue with experience cake-cutters I would explain that you could get 30 small slices out of a 10" round, but in most cases the customers who cut cake themselves will not refer to directions and will complain that there wasn't enough cake.

Yes, 10 inch round will serve upto 30 people. The slices are not small, if it has a proper height of 4 inches or taller. I usually recommend customers cut cake into 4 strips, outside strips at about 6-7 slices each, middle strips at 8-9 slices each.

A newbie question as it relates to cutting the cake. Why are their different size guides for wedding & party cakes? Is it because party cakes are not cut but professionals who know the standard cutting sizes?

Standard size party cake servings are 12 cubic inches (1.5"x2"x4"), while standard wedding cake servings are 8 cu in (1"x2"x4"). Wedding cake servings are smaller because weddings typically have a lot more food options, so the idea is guests will be satisfied with smaller pieces of cake.
