Hi all! I'm doing a 2-tiered cherry blossom cake for saturday and I've got a few questions. I want to copy this cake I found on pinterest:

I hope the link works - if it doesn't, it's a picture of a 2-tiered round cherry blossom cake with very sharp edges - sleek and modern looking.
All the cakes I've done so far have been buttercream - I'm not 100% confident enough yet with fondant to do a nice cake with it...so my question is, can I do a cherry blossom cake like this one in buttercream rather than fondant? And if so, how would I attach the cherry blossoms and sticks to the buttercream? I know with fondant you would use royal icing, but would that work on buttercream as well?
I'm not totally opposed to using fondant if it would turn out better - I've been wanting to move on to fondant, just not 100% confident yet...but I do know someone here who's experienced in fondant who could help me if necessary. Anyway, would love everyone's opinions. Thanks!
