So I just had a bride email me a link to a website where she really liked a cake. Its not a bakery
Its one of those sites with all things bridal...

And this is what it said:
A simple style cake will cost about one to two bucks per serving

WHAT?!

Can you imagine a wedding cake for a $1 a slice?
I don't even think walmart makes them that cheap!!

She understands her cake is not simple and doesn't fall in that range but
still! are they nuts?!

I think most places start wedding cake servings at around $3.00 per slice. That would be a good place to start. Don't ever undersell yourself.

I charge $5 a serving. She ended up booking with me anyway. I normally don't do tastings unless they are paid but I made an exception in this case. Its just crazy that someone would put that on thier site (It was updated this year!)

Those sites are usually no better than bridal magazines that give brides all kinds of horrible advice and misinformation. Especially when it comes to the cake! icon_rolleyes.gif

yeah it also said to order 20% less then the guest headcount. Because some people wont eat it....Unless you have a table where the guest grabs there own dessert I think thats stupid... What are the waiters going to do pass out dessert and skip every couple guests?

Ugh, yes I have seen that one too. They always present that as such a great little money-saving tip for brides. Such a ridiculous idea! I feel bad for the guests who get jipped on the cake!

that's actually true, though. If people serve themselves they tend to grab more than one serving of whatever. Doesn't mean they'll eat it. To get the servings for the wedding cake, you should estimate 80% of the number of guests attending the reception, because there are people who don't eat cake. Some people are dancing, some are at the bar, etc. When I tell brides that they usually look at the groom and say "You know, I never eat cake at weddings" or something like that.

Also, venues tend to cut slices REALLY thin, so you'll get more pieces out of the cake than you think. I was cutting a cake at an event his week, and I was going thin because I wasn't sure how many people were there. The venue coordinator made a remark about how the pieces I was cutting were "really generous." I was thinking how crazy that was because I was cutting it about 1/2" thick, but they do cut it smaller than they should so that was what she was used to seeing.

The $1-2 a serving is just dumb, though. icon_rolleyes.gif
