Stars with wires for cake top decor. How do I make them?

Hi. I see so many cakes with wire decor that have stars or letters on them. Is it wire or something else? Are the stars and letters fondant, gumpaste, choc. molds or else? I want to put those stars on my daughter's cake, can I buy them from somewhere? Please help.

I generally cut them from fairly thick (1/4" or so) fondant or gumpaste, insert a 26-gauge wire in them and let them dry. When I put them in the cake, I place them in straws so the wires don't directly touch the cake.I must have about 12 different sizes of star cutters, so I can do any size I want or combine them. HTH.

For stars, this is 100% what I do!! I have done some chocolate transfers of more intricate designs & secure the wire with melted chocolate.

The tip I tried last time was to use floral stem wire and it work great. I liked that wire was thin but strong enough to hold the fondant without bending too much. I found them at Michaels in a pack of 30 pieces (about 18" long) for about $3.00. They had silver, green and white and I used wire cutters to cut them the length I wanted. I made my stars thicker and when I pushed the wire in it didn't poke out. Then I laid them flat to dry before I used them on the cake. Good luck!
