I've been able to solve a lot of my fondant problems by practicing and watching tutorials etc. but recently watching a tutorial has me wondering this question, do you use a cake circle and decorative cake board? What I'm saying is that sometimes I still have issues getting a crisp cut at the base of my cake. I was watching some tutorials and seems when they finish off a cake in fondant they are finishing it on a circle that is the same size as the cake which seems to give it a nicer finish on the edge. All this time I've been putting my cake directly on the larger cake board I decorate but now I wonder if it would be beneficial to put it on a cake circle first. Does that make sense? I'm talking about the bottom tier here. And if you do that then how do you attach the cake to the decorative cake board?

I put my cake on a circle the same size as my cake and I decorate it however I would normally (fondant or bc)... I then put it on a decorative circle slightly larger (or just directly on the stand sometimes)... I usually attach it with a little bit of icing to keep it from sliding around...

I don't usually make a cake over two tiers and have never had a problem with the bit of frosting keeping me from having my tiers level...

I will use non-skid mat on the cake drum or cake plate so the cake board will not slide around

Yes, I always put a same size cake board under my bottom tier. I decorate it and move it around as needed and then set it on the final decorated board, attached with a little frosting.

Thank you for all the replies, I have a couple cakes coming up so I'm going to give it a try with the extra cake circle and see if that helps my fondant edge issue. icon_smile.gif
