Cracks in gumpaste

I am trying to roll a perfectly smooth ball in gumpaste and I am having the worst time getting rid of the cracks. I have smoothed it out only to find it reappears! Is there a trick in getting the gumpaste ball perfectly smooth? Thank you.

I had this problem also. I just used a little vegetable oil and mine turned out fine. Hope this helps.

Did you just mix a little in the gumpaste? I have crisco that I am using on my hands and I put some on the gumpaste when it feels like it is getting dry.

Yes. Just a little though. It was enough to make it a little more pliable and easier to work with without the cracking.

Knead it well by squishing and or pulling/stretching it.

Then roll it between your hands using alot of pressure until there are no cracks. If you still have cracks, I would knead it again, because the 'skin' that forms on the gumpaste from the air is what is making the cracks. The rolling it first with heavy pressure will help as well.

After it is crack free I will lighten up the pressure to form your shape.
