Maybe, one easy way to find out is to require an up-front cash deposit with an estimated price range.
Well, actually they will have to pay in full at this point. I was just wondering how it is possible for a scammer to make money on this
I would suggest you just don't reply, they probably won't contact you again. But if they do go a little further and tell them you consider this a last minute order and want to be in full within 7-10 days of the event, Raise the price to see if they are for real, ask for a telephone number in which you call them back to see if its legit.
ATTENTION: Definately this is a scam!! DO NOT reply in any way. Stay away from this for sure.
This type of wording has been going around the net for years now.
The way they make money is to ask you to make change for $100s of $ over your asking price so they can pay the 'shipper' or who ever is picking up this creation. There is no shipper or any other party.

All the scam alerts say the single biggest tip-off is spelling and wording. Cakes do not say "Happy Married", etc. etc. The second scam alert is to create a sense of urgency.
If this was a serious customer, (NOT), she would not be sending vague emails.
Absolutely it's a scam.
Generally speaking, if your gut is telling you it's a scam, then YES.
Sounds like a scam to me. I almost got caught like this once and when I told them I was no longer available they told me they would move the date of the wedding to suit me (for a cake!). They told me they had already sent me a check, I sent back an email telling them that I would under no circumstances accept it, would send it back to them and would report them if they continued. Needless to say I never received anything or heard another word from them again.
From what I understand - I could be wrong so anyone in the know can clarify - they send you a check for an amount larger than your asking price and then or you send them back cash or it goes through the bank or something. Not exactly sure but either way - stay away.

Ahhhh, I see...well that's just nuts. Defies any common sense
I got this email from a man two years ago. They're back at it again.
My business credit card just got hacked by someone making online purchases at EA Sports Dublin. They took me for $411. I wish there was a way to get these jerks!
I received this email today. I deleted it right away after reading the "happy married". I also received one from a Judy White regarding a "cupcake order" a couple weeks ago so look out for that one too. They both reek of scam.
I've included the emails below so that you can see them. BTW, I sensed this was a scam right away - I'm not usually this rude to potential customers.
when will you have chance to do it for me so that the carrier can come for the pick up ?

Hello Janet,
You don't mention the date of the party and what the theme is. Could you let me know the date and I'll check to see if I have availability before I give you a quote. Where did you find my email address if you don't have access to the website?
Thanks,
Suzanne

Hi Suzy Q,
Yes, definitely a scam! I got the exact same email and have been "playing along". She has asked for me to pay the "carrier" up front and she will pay me back. Whatever happened to the normal "you've won the Nigerian lottery" scams?
Best regards!

Have you turned her in to the police?
Ha ha....just got an email from this same address. I've been toying with her for abit. She's getting a bit frustrated with me though. Can't say I don't enjoy it immensely.
Because people's "spidey sense" usually starts tingling when they get one of these emails, but they're not exactly sure what the scam entails, I wrote a short article to help explain and identify it.
The Cake Scam
For whoever asked how they make money.
They will eventually send you a bank check, that will look exactly like the real deal. You deposit it and 2 weeks later, the bank will remove the money from your account because they found out the check is fake. ( They send all check to be verified and it can take a good 2 weeks ). Even if your account as no more money in it, they do not care, your the one who passed a fraudulent check and the money will be owed back to the bank.
The scammer usually sends " more " money, to pay for a carrier, to pay the shipping charges to some random company that supposely will pick up the item, because they made a " mistake " and whatever other reasons. Then they will ask you to go to western union and wire money back to them wich you will never ever see again. And western union will never ever give back to you either since the money is available to whoever is on the other end as soon as the clerk finishes your paperwork.
Thanks Kelly! Suzy Q I received the same exact email this morning from Janet White! I was a little apprehensive but I did reply. I am very happy I decided to take a look at the forums this morning, now I know not to even continue to waste my time. Thanks everyone.

The Cake Scam
And on that site, it says:
"Although its tempting to mess with them, the best thing to do is just ignore the email. Dont reply, this lets them know theyve got a good email address."
Yeah I had to respond because it was just too funny. I put
"Janet,
I'm sorry but we do not allows pickups, only deliveries. The price would be $5,000 for 500 cupcakes. What date would you need them? We only accept cash. Thank you."
So glad I read this forum
I got exact same EM. From this very dumb character. They need to smarten up, use better English and brush up on their writing skills
From the 1st EM I received really rang some bells in my head.
Thanks fellow business owners for your heads up on this scam

I get these all the time...I just answered one guy with "the cost is ten million dollars, cash only, payable in advance at Yo Momma's house." For some reason he didn't write back.
We received an email from [email protected] last week!
She said that she could only communicate via text or email due to a hearing problem for which she was getting surgery for.
After some back and forth she asked me to pay the "carrier" $750 via Western Union because they were having problems with their credit card machine...
NO thanks!
Thanks for having this posted, I'm so glad that I googled the email address!

Ha ha, Genius!
I received the SAME email.. I requested that they pay in person with an ID. They responded back with "I'll scan my ID" ................
NOT!![/b]
I decided to play with the one that I got today (I get one a day at least). I answered back like it was a normal request but put the address for the police headquarters down when they wanted the address of the shipper to pick the cupcakes up. I'm going to see how far I can string them along if they write back
