How do I support 3d Numbers and Letters on my cakes???

Every time I see a freestanding fondant/gumpaste number or monogram on a cake, I wonder, how on earth did they make it stand up like that?? I don't see any supports, no icing...
Does anyone have suggestions for me? Is wire covered in fondant and then a letter or number formed? If that is the case, what kind of wire?
Any help would be greatly appreciated! icon_confused.gif

I use wire or toothpicks to stand them up.

I insert a toothpick into the bottom when it's still soft, leave flat to dry, once dry it should hold it's shape while standing.
