How easy is it to work with.....like putting on the sides of a cake? My concern is the weight of the candy falling off. Cheapest place to purchase? Anyone have luck making their own colored rock candy?

Also, if I bought rock candy, what flavor(s) of cake and filling would go well with lemon and blue raspberry candy?

I made my own as a fourth grade science project. It's pretty easy. I use a recipe from Gesine Bullock-Prado, but I'm sure the internet is full of them.

To add to a cake, wouldn't it kind of melt somewhat in the frosting? Like a sucker or hard candy? Maybe even bleed? Just test it.

It's easy to make, but you need some patience to let it "grow." Besides, you might not get the exact color you want.

NY Baking store has a big selection of colors. I don't think they're cheap, though. But here's a link to a photo, so that you can see.

And it doesn't fall off, but you have to use smaller pieces if it's on the sides. This first cake sample is one of my favorites:

I had no idea what the application looked like. I just knew how to make the candy. That is an interesting idea.
