....that the cakes can somehow tell when you are tired/stressed/short on time/having a bad day and they think it's funny to make it worse. Seriously. This week has been one big cake disaster.
I started with one cake booked for the weekend- for my cousins bridal tea. I was already planning on attending that tea, as well as another one the following day(today). The aunt of the bride for today's tea calledme Tuesday to ask me to make that cake as well. I like more notice than that, but because it's my best friends sister I agreed.
So, juggling my day job, I started baking and freezing the layers. In a moment of stupid I decided to swap the cakes on the top and bottom racks....and....as expected.....they all fell. Dumb. So I threw out enought cake for 70 people. Bleh.
I re-baked and froze, only to get a phone call and be told they want to change the cake from 70 servings to 50. Made my fondant flowers and my white chocolate ganache. But of course, the ganache didn't set right. Never been a problem before now, but of course now I didn't have time to make more. So I went with the SMBC, which I've made numerous times. Aaaaaand I broke it. Argh.
Second batch was better. Matched my fondant exactly to my cousins fabric swatch from her bridesmaids dresses, only to have it crack and crumble when I covered the cake. Threw it out, made more. Spent half the night finishing the cake. It came out lovely! Went to bed planning on getting 6 hours of sleep, going to the tea, coming home and finishing second cake.
Was awakened with a call four hours later....my grandfather passed away. Needless to say, I didn't get started on the cake till pretty late and my SMBC would NOT cooperate!!! I have spent all night trying to get it to smooth, hiding rough spots, doing whatever I can to make it ok....and trying not to throw. It against the wall.... *sigh*
Sorry to be so long winded....it's just been a tough week. Does this happen to anyone else?!
