Hello everyone,

I am baking a cake for my friend's son's Bday...I need to cover the cake board which will hold wilton oval shape cake( big one) and also lots of other toy decorations around the cake( not on the top). I am making a customized cake board, but i have trouble covering it. I need to have the cake board green in color and cannot cover it with fondant or buttercream( as the board is too huge to cover with fondant and cannot have buttercream).. Is there any other way to cover the cake board and keep the cake on it ( without any problems). Please help I need to have this cake ready by Sat afternoon.

Really counting on all the experts to help me out ...

Thanks

Your local cake store might have green foil, that's the way I'd go...

you can cover it with wrapping paper or anything really as long as there is a food safe barrier between the cake and the board. i used zebra printed duck tape to cover a board but i covered it with plastic wrap.

@Chonte and @SRumzis, thanks a lot for your respnses. I will search for green foil and will check if I plastic wrap will look good under the decorations.

If anyone have any other suggestions, plz do share,

TIA

I'm confused about why the board is too big to cover in fondant......You could use more than one piece and hide the join with toys or some "snakes" of fondant - maybe create a design with the "snakes" or something. That's what I would do.

Good luck!

I flood my cake boards with royal icing and let it dry over night. I have put both fondant, buttercream and cream cheese iced cakes on top of it with no problems.

I buy plastic tablecloths at the $ store. As a matter of fact, just purchased a green one for my St. Patrick Day Cake. Since it is not food safe, I put the cake on a cake circle the same size as the cake. This way cake does not come in contact with the plastic tablecloth.

@Chelle, @blissfulbaker & @Goreti,
Thanks alot for your inputs.

@Chelle, My Cake board is 32in x 22in. That's the reason I did not want to use fondant.

@Goreti, I was thinking about the same method incase nothing else worked out.

You could also use fabric and then cover with plastic wrap or a same-size piece of glass or, as Goreti said, put the cake on a food-safe circle on top of the fabric.

Definitely plastic table covers for a board that big. I actually use them for almost all of my cakes because they come in almost every color! Dollar Tree has a pretty good selection, but if you don't find the color you need check a party supply store like IParty. They are a little more expensive there, but they have every color imaginable!
