Is a white cake/cupcake the same as a vanilla cake/cupcake? Customers will ask for a "white" cupcake and Im not sure if a vanilla cupcake will be the same as a white cupcake. To me white cake tends to not have much taste, correct? Its mostly for weddings and to make the filling stand out, from my understanding. Im just wondering if I would be able to use a vanilla cupcake in place of a white cake.

The way I understand it, a white cake is made with egg whites rather than whole eggs and can have any flavor including vanilla.

A yellow cake is made with yolks only, and can also be vanilla flavored.

Color and flavor are 2 different things though people tend to mix them up and refer to a white cake as vanilla cake.

WASC (White Almond Sour Cream) cake is common for weddings. It is a white cake.

I use the Original WASC recipe for my white cake with almond flavor/vanilla flavor. If a client wants vanilla, I use the same recipe, just omit the almond and add a little extra vanilla. BTW, this recipe used whole eggs and it still pretty white.

In my world, white cake and vanilla cake are the same thing. Yellow cake is entirely different.

Whiet and vanilla are the same for me. Yellow cake tends to be more buttery tasting I think.

Thank you for the responses. Its so hard when you are trying to figure out what the customer wants exactly when they dont seem to know for sure. I wanted to make sure I had a better understanding on what, if any, differences were between white and vanilla.
