Hi, all- I bought a set of petal dusts (tiles in the palette form) today and was trying to paint features on a face for the first time. I was attempting this by soaking my paintbrush in vodka, rubbing on the tile and applying to the face, but it was not going very well. Any suggestions? Do I need to shave some of the tile off into a separate bowl and mix with vodka? I am kind of hoping no, because I was hoping for minimal waste, but if that is the best way I am willing to attempt! The "paint" I had was very thin and streaky, and evaporated within a few seconds. Any help would be appreciated!

I know that you wish there were another way, but frankly, I don't see you have any choice. The dust has to be suspended in the vodka to be able to apply evenly. I use a selection of dusts, along with the tile palettes. With the palette form, I apply dry with a small make-up sponge. It gives a soft effect and blends well. For finer detail, I use a very small artist's brush, dipped into the vodka/ dust mixture, or vodka/gel or paste color.
You might want to search the forums for threads on making your own dusts. I have been able to greatly expand my color selections by grinding non-toxic artist's pastel chalk against a tea strainer. It is a very economical method and they are easily stored in the little plastic containers sold in craft stores.
