Hiya,my bride wants to use her own footed cake stand to display her 3 tier wedding cake. Its 12" across, but her bottom tier is 12 " so the cake itself will be on a board of 16". Will this work in terms of stability as long of course cake isn't moved after set yp? Should I advise against this? Can't seem to find a footed cake stand wider than 12" so should I tell her to use a regular stand to be on the safe side? Thanks!
There's no way in hell that I'd put a three-tiered wedding cake on a footed cake stand for any length of time. They're too heavy, which will make the cake stand unstable, and she'll end up with a cake on the table and not in an upright position.
The photos of cakes on stands drive me crazy, and I have to explain to people all the time that they're probably styrofoam cakes, not real ones. If it's a tiny cake then MAYBE I'd do it, and by tiny I mean a 4-6-8, but not for one as big as what you're describing!

one of my biggest pet peeves
You said 'foodted cake stand' do you mean pedestal? I've put my tiered cakes on pedestal stands all the time and I haven't had a problem...yet! I haven't gone bigger than a 10", 8", 6" though.
That being said, there is NO way I would put a cake of that size on a pedestal! You are asking for trouble if you do. And you need to be careful that what stand is used is strong enough to hold the weight. A bride brought her own stand to the bakery I worked for and while it looked like one of those sturdy silver stands, it wasn't. The legs of the stand bent outwards under the weight of her cake. Thank goodness all four went splat...otherwise the cake could have slid off.
I have put large cakes on wooden pedestal stands from Sarah's Stands with no problems, ever. And they are actual cakes, not styrofoam cakes.http://sarahsstands.com/
