Hey guys,

I just stumbled upon a website for colored candies which offer several silver candies. It appears they ship to CA too. This might be a good option for us in CA who can't buy silver degrees. They sell other colors too.

http://www.ohnuts.com/buy.cfm/bulk-candy/unwrapped-candy/bead/silver-pearl-beads

Just in case they delete the link to the website, it is www. ohnuts. com (remove the spaces)

Happy Caking!!!!

I've never understood what the deal is behind the prohibition against dragees in California. Is it because they might break your teeth or is it because there's some ingredient in them that could be bad for you? It's nice that you can get them elsewhere, if that´s what you need.

I don't understand why we can't buy them here anymore. We used to eat them as kids and never had any problems. I was lucky an owner of a cake supply store out here had some on hand and sold them to me. His family lives in Germany and mails them to him. The only time I used them was to make a chain for a dog tag cake.

You can use sugar pearls, if you buy white and put in bag with some dust to color.

I used to live in California. The fear of god was put into the hearts of bakers and suppliers by an attorney who makes a living filing suits against suppliers and sellers of dragees. Even the attorney general of California didn't see the danger of dragees and refused to bring suit.

I'm proposing a medical dragees initiative. Those of you who wish to use dragees will get a licensed baker to write us a prescription for dragees. Carry the license with you at all times and if stopped by the cake police or California lawyers then we show them the license. Of course you will be limited to only the amount of dragees needed for personal use....no carrying with intent to distribute or sell. Little dragee shops will spring up on every corner.

Alternatively, you can abandon Hotel California and move to the great state of South Carolina where dragees are legal (but marijuana isn't...go figure).

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!! Yep...that's California!!!!

They were outlawed because of the trace amounts of mercury or lead in them. I can't rememeber which. But yeah, you would have to eat bottles and bottles of them to be considered "posioned", but us crazy Californians had to ban them. One crazy health nut gets ahold of the test results and causes a major scare....you will all die if you eat silver dagrees!!!! So silly!!!!!!

Mom2two, the state (or federal) regulators never found any hazardous substances in the dragees. Dragees had mercury coatings a long long time ago but not longer. Dragees don't come into California only because of the threat of a law suit brought by Mark Pollack against over one hundred suppliers of dragees. Rather than incur costs of fighting this suit, the defendants settled with an agreement not to sell in California. The case never went to trial and no judgment was ever rendered.
