I saw this on pinterest, I've been asked to do it for a wedding cake. Can anyone tell me if they used fondant or butter cream? or both? how they got the texture? how they got the colour? either airbrush or in the fondat?.... or something else. I need some help please!

I'm not much help either, but I can't wait to hear ideas from people we are able to help
I can't be a ton of help, but looking at the full-size image it sure looks like it's buttercream. The tops of each tier look like they were piped with a large star tip and allowed to kind of flatten out. You could scratch the marks in and then paint with black food coloring, but I don't know about the knot holes. Good luck and I'll be interested to watch others' insights as well.
Sorry I'm no help with the pic - but I just have to say that cake grosses me out! I can't help but see wounds....
Yeah like gaping giant paper cuts. Anyway, here is a thread from a while back:

The original artist made a tutorial for the birch cake. It costs money, but it looks like it's worth it,
AI purchased the tutorial and it was very helpful. I will be doing this cake in a few weeks for a girlfriend of mine and I'm excited about trying it out! Buy the tutorial; it's worth it.
