VERY URGENT - WILL RED GEL SHOW ON BLACK HARD ICING?

Hi guys
very urgent answer as i need to buy the stuff in the next couple of hours
will red gel show on black or dark brown fondant (pettinice) hard icing?

i was wondering if maybe its too transparent, maybe the black will show through and kill the colour???

well, what kind of effect are you trying to produce?

I would assume that the black would just make it look barely red...so your gut is right.

not sure what you want to do but you wont be able to use the red to paint on the black, that will barely show. you can however colour some pettinice red and then make cutouts to add to a black cake. this will show.

sorry guys, when I say RED GEL I meant red PIPING GEL ... so ive boiled corn starch, sugar, water and lemon juice until it was thick, coloured it,...
ok now ive just mucked up my cake... I did the gel last night and so it was rather firm today.
because I was doing to lava effect on the cake, I decided I'd soften the gel in the microwave.
I then put that on my fondant covered cake.... AND.... it was too hot and heavy and didn't stick and it slid down the cake!!!!! SO now...... I've scraped all the gel offf.... its 12.30am here and I'm going to bed
im hoping the cake fondant surely would dry by the morning (though its very warm here tonight)...
and im wondering.... do I attempt it again - with cold gel this time, shoudl it definitely stick to the fondant? or do I take the easier and less effective option and whip up some red buttercream?

I think you should do both. Whip up the buttercream and do a little of the piping gel. But don't warm it up as much or at all. Hope that helps. Good luck

hot stuff should never be put on fondant icon_sad.gif opps!

i would use buttercream now...you'll be able to cover up the mess and it will probably make it look more realistic. hot lava is not clear...it's is very orange and red! if you just make it so that your buttercream is thin but not too thin, you could probably still get a flowing effect.

I've now got the blue piping gel to stay on down the bottom as water
But I'm wondering , do you think it will look funny to have red buttercream and blue gel?

I don't think that will look funny. Water is clear but lava is not, so I think that will look just right.

I know it's too late but next time I would cut out lava flows from red fondant then paint them with gel to make it look liquid.

thanks ladies, I ended up taking all the gel off and doing it all with buttercream. It looked fine
I could have tried the gel again but its very hot here and it needed to stand another 24 hrs at least before the party so I knew I was safe with buttercream and didn't want to take my chances! I'm lucky this happened late and night and I still had to the morning to see what happened over night and fix it before the guy came to pick it up! Its a lesson or reminder never to do these things at the last minute too.
