charging to much?? and boxed cake??

i got a order for 150 cupcakes (she wants a cupcake tree) and a two tiered cake (http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10151341735640454&set=a.10150361253725454.583512.522265453&type=1&theater). Im thinking $700. $3 a cupcake and a flat rate of $200 for the cake. is that too much????

Also 99% of the time i do vegan cakes and pastries. when i do normal cakes i use dressed up boxed mix. but this is a massive amount of mix needed and that would add up fast. is there a larger boxed cake mix that you use or can recommend??

ill have to have a cupcake tree made for this

Nope, that price is not too much. There is a considerable amount of time and ingredients involved.

What would your cost be for this order, including ingredients, labor, and per-order overhead?

If that much of your business is vegan then why not just use the vegan recipes for everything? People generally can't tell the difference between a good vegan cake and a non-vegan cake.

You can buy bulk bag of cake mix from your local wholesaler (FSA, Sysco, etc...), but if you can get 24 cupcakes from a regular box (if memory serves - I don't use boxes), then you'd only be needing 6 boxes for the cupcakes and a couple more for the tiered cake. Most bulk mix is 25 or 50# per bag so that would leave you with a lot of leftover of a product that you say you don't use much of.

Hi,

This is just a suggestion. I usually give a 10% discount on my cupcakes after they purchase 100 at full price. In yr case, Full price for the 1st 100 cupcakes and 10% off the next 50 cupcakes. But, thats just me. I think that yr flat rate for the 2 tier cake is fair depending on you icon_smile.gif

Take a look at this: I have ordered from time and svc is great and on time too. I'm not sure if you want to use cardboard but they are very sturdy and dressable too.

its been so long since ive used cake mix seeing as for family i make scratch or vegan. i guess ill have to try it out thanks for the heads up. 7 boxs isnt bad. she wants the "standard" vanilla, chocolate and strawberry, and for the cake bottom tier strawberry and top vanilla.

that cupcake stand isn't a bad price. i like the 10% discount now that im thinking about it i think ill just charge 2.50 a cc ($375) + $50 cc tree + $150 for the cake + $25 delivery (gas is $4.25 so i have to charge for that) = $600? does that sound more fair?

yes you would id just give it to you the house!!! i told the lady $450 because the grocery store charges 1.99 a cc. lets hope i brake even. i can never own my own company

I know what you mean bc I used to do the same thing umtil I realized that I was selling myself REAL SHORT. I was not even coming close to what I was spending to produce a cake. So, what I started doing was quoting a price and kept in mind " It's either they take it or leave it!" It might sound mean but it's the truth. It was really hard for me to adjust to this way of thinking bc I'm a very generous person. I can tell you this, every since I put my foot forward and stood by that quote, I haven't had anyone say "That's too much", I am always negotiable too but I learned how NOT to sell myself short. In the future, you should always quote what your worth. You should have told yr customer the price would be what you originally said $700 and mentioned that you are going to give her a $50 discount bc of the amount she is ordering. Thats a good place to start, then, if her response was "thats too much", you try to negotiate with her and see where it goes icon_smile.gif

I guess god was looking out because the email didnt go through so i emailed her today and said 375 for the cupcakes and 175 for the cake!!! and she said okay!! wow im so proud!!!!!

yes yes he always is!!! thanks for giving me the push i need to charge enough to cover cost! I got super lucky and my uncle is going to make me a few cupcake stands in exchange for one bunt cake. so that saved me 50 right off the top!!!
