Hexagon cake advice needed

I have a request for a cake with the top tier being hexagon and the rest being square. It's my first hexagon. I can't picture how that shape combo will look with only top tier being hex and rest square. I can't seem to find pics of that combo. My bride would be open to suggestions (alternating shapes?). Or if I can be convinced it'll look god then I'll do what she wants. I think she's open... Also, is it easy enough to carve my own hexagon out of a round layer? Or should I just buy a hex pan?

Thanks for any and all suggestions/ideas.

I think it will look fine, depending on the design you go with. Very modern.

Just buy a pan. They are cheap enough and will save some headache. Hex cakes need to be iced and covered in fondant precisely, each side being exactly the same size, same angel etc. otherwise they look really really bad. It's much easier to do if you have a perfect hex cake to start with.

I made a 5-tier hexagon/round, alternating wedding cake for my youngest son. They loved it. I think the square/hexagon should be fine.

I agree, buy the cake pan, a lot easier! The hexagonal cake is also very easy to cover with fondant!

I've seen them with square on bottom, and hexagon tiers after that, but most usually end with a round on top.
