I was looking for recommendations on an extruder, and saw a few people use clay extruders -- if this is used for fondant/gum paste only would those be okay? Does anyone have a good recommendation for an extruder?

I never liked the red and black version.

I do have a green clay one that I have used just for fondant/gumpaste.

There is a one that is a larger version, with the squeeze handle, but I can't think of who makes it off the top of my head, and they are very pricey.

There should have been a description on there...It' s a sugarcraft gun. Anyway try this:

The craft store clay extruders don't work well- I have tried.

CC blocks that work because of past issues with a company.

Go to the orginal link, look for the tips and tools list then you can scroll down until you find it. icon_smile.gif

I use the green Makins clay extruder and it works great! I've not used the black and red one. Just put crisco in the barrel and on your fondant or gum paste and it comes out very smooth. tonedna has a youtube tutorial on how to use it.

I have 2 that I use. I have the red & black sugar*craft gun and the clay extruder from Walnut Hollow they sell at Michaels. I like them both. The barrell on the Walnut Hollow extruder is larger so it holds more fondant and I think the fondant comes out a little easier.

I also use the green Makins clay extruder, and I believe that Michaels craft stores now carry it. I bought mine online, but I think the price at Michaels is quite reasonable. After I opened it, I noticed it was lubricated with something, so I washed it and disinfected it really good, and lubricated it with crisco shortening. Great for cake decorating icon_smile.gif

The hair on this gorilla was done with the Makin's extruder. I have arthritis and just the thought of squeezing out all that hair with the trigger type extruder makes my hands hurt. With the Makin's it went lickety split. It goes without saying that any tool one uses for caking is used ONLY for caking no matter what its original purpose may have been.

Have any of you tried the Wilton one? I picked it up from Michaels when it was on clearance for $8, but I haven't opened the package yet. I noticed no one recommended it, is there anything wrong with it?

I love the Walnut Hollow clay extruder that I got at Michael's and with a 50% off coupon, the price was just right! And it comes in a nice plastic carry case with 20 different discs.

I found the Walnut Hut extruder difficult to use. It (at least mine) won't turn anymore. : (

Are you using shortening on your fondant or gumpaste before putting it into the tube. I know if I forget that step, it is almost impossible to get the handle to turn. But other than that, I have no problems whatsoever and I too have problems with my hands. Sorry it isn`t working for you... icon_sad.gif

I just re-read your post...is it the Walnut HOLLOW extruder that you have.
