To be honest with you, wilton fondant is going to taste terrible no matter what you do (or don't do) to it. But if I need a black fondant I add cocoa powder to it first and make it chocolate, sometimes you need to add a little bit of water or corn syrup to make the fondant take the cocoa. Then add your black and you won't need to add as much.

i always start with a brown fondant and then start adding in the black. but what type of food coloring are you using? if it's just wilton paste then you have to use a LOT....but the brown would help it

I don't have a specific amount, adding any will lesson the amount of food coloring you will need. Just add small amounts at a time, being careful to watch the work ability of the fondant. I typically use MMF, so I sub some of the PS with cocoa and add until it just won't take any more.

FYI, adding a little cocoa will help get a deep red also.

Another suggestion; Start with chocolate fondant and paint with black gel paste mixed with clear alcohol or vodka........Or airbrush in black

I wouldn't mess around with Wilton fondant under any circumstances. Try this recipe I posted for dark chocolate fondant: http://theicedqueen.blogspot.com/2012/01/chocolate-fondant-from-scratch.html
As you can see, it's almost black to begin with. Here's how it looks after I added AmeriColor black gel: http://theicedqueen.blogspot.com/2012/02/monster-high-cake-learning-experience.html

Good luck!

I stopped adding cocoa bc the fondant would then be too dry and crumble, I now melt some dark chocolate and add that to the fondant (I make MMF) and then add some black americolor colouring to get a dark black. Works a charm and tastes delicious too!
